Short Article - Nisan 10 Lord of the Sabbath

Nisan 10 Lord of the Sabbath

Jesus said, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”  Yet despite whatever our circumstances, Jesus promised us peace and rest.

Mark 11:11 recorded:  On Nisan 10 of the year of Jesus’ crucifixion, Jesus and His twelve disciples left Jerusalem and headed back to Bethany.  On the day prior (Nisan 9), Jesus rode on a donkey into Jerusalem, had a tour inside the Temple, but did not engage in any cleansing of the Temple, teaching Temple attendees, or healing the sick.  Then the following day, Nisan 10 was just another regular Sabbath day when the Priest carried out his sacrificial duties in the Temple (Numbers 28); but as usual the Temple was not open to the populace, hence, no prayers, no sacrifice offerers, nor any law-ordained ceremonies performed.  Jesus and His twelve disciples did not go to the Temple either in the daytime of Nisan 10.  No mentioning of what Jesus did on Nisan 10 is found in any of the four Gospels.

What Jesus did on Sabbath day

  1. He went to worship in the synagogue.  (Luke 4:16)
  2. Jesus was the Lord of the Sabbath and carried out His work guided by the Holy Spirit.  (Matthew 12:1-8, Mark 3:1-6, John 5:1-18, John 9)
  3.  He was invited to the banquet.  (Luke 14:1-6)
  4. He healed and saved those who were weary and heavy-laden.

Below is the list of the seven healing miracles Jesus performed on the Sabbath.

Our Lord Jesus is gentle and humble.  He and the Father are one.  Jesus deemed it His greatest pleasure to be obedient to His Heavenly Father.

For you and me, our perfect peace rests on:  offering our all on the altar, praying that our Lord’s will be done through us, and accomplishing His work assigned for us.

Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, … and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)

Note:

Nisan 10 also happens to be the day when Joshua led his people to go up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho (Joshua 4:19).  Today, the Jewish people celebrate this day as their special holiday: Yom HaAliyah.
